Service intervalsLast updated: 18 June 2012 The L322 responds dramatically to good servicing — many of its expensive failures trace straight back to skipped maintenance. The factory "lifetime" claims on the gearbox and other fluids should not be taken literally. Here's a practical schedule. QUICK ANSWER
Service the engine regularly and don't trust 'sealed for life' on the gearbox — change its fluid every ~4 years / 40k miles. Use a specialist who knows L322s. [ ▲ ] Photo: gearbox / engine service in progress add image here
About these figures: the intervals below are PRACTICAL
recommendations widely used by Land Rover specialists and owners — they are not
the official Land Rover service schedule. Land Rover marketed several of these fluids as
"sealed for life". Items marked OEM are
manufacturer specifications. Always confirm against the official handbook / RAVE manual for your
exact car.

TIP
On the TDV8s, "the engine rewards paranoia" — early oil changes and a pre-emptive metal
coolant pipe are the cheapest insurance you can buy.

WHY IT MATTERS
Skipping gearbox fluid can cause failure in as little as 60,000 miles — and a
replacement runs £4,500-5,000, enough to write off a cheap car. A £200-400 service
is cheap by comparison.

NOTE
ZF/GM auto fluid level must be checked at a specific fluid temperature (around 35-45°C)
using diagnostic kit — it's not a simple dipstick job. Use a specialist who knows the L322
procedure.
