Running costs

Last updated: 18 June 2012

Let's be honest: the L322 is not cheap to run. It was an expensive car new, so parts and labour are above average, and it's heavy on fuel, brakes and tyres. Budget properly and it's manageable; buy a cheap neglected one and it can ruin you.

Key takeaway: Budget realistically (~£1,000-2,000/yr on an older car) and use a specialist — an L322 run on a shoestring will cost far more in the end.
About these costs: every price on this page is an ESTIMATE drawn from owner forums, used-car guides and specialist quotes (roughly 2021-2023, mostly UK £). They are not official Land Rover prices and vary widely by region, specialist and the car's condition. Use them for rough budgeting only.

Running-cost calculator

A rough annual estimate based on your mileage and choice of engine. Figures are INDICATIVE period guides, not a quote.

⚙ ANNUAL COST CALCULATOR

miles
£ / litre

Fuel REAL-WORLD

EngineTypical economy
4.2 / 5.0 Supercharged~13-18 mpg
4.4 V8 petrol~17-19 mpg
3.0 Td6 diesel~25 mpg
3.6 TDV8?TDV8 — Land Rover's twin-turbo diesel V8 (3.6, later 4.4) — the 'AJD-V8' / 'Lion' engine, prized for huge torque. diesel~25 mpg
4.4 TDV8 diesel~30 mpg

Many petrol owners fit LPG to cut fuel costs: ask for an installation certificate and receipts if a car has it.

Servicing costs (period, indicative) ESTIMATE

JobRough cost
Main dealer service (JLR)~£750
Independent "A" service~£400
ZF 8-speed gearbox service~£1,080
Annual maintenance (when newer)~£1,200 / $1,258 avg

Big-ticket repairs ESTIMATE

RepairRough cost
Gearbox (exchange, all-in)£4,500-5,000
Transfer box (recon)£1,200-1,800
TDV8 coolant pipe (worst case hydrolock?hydrolock — Liquid (coolant) entering a cylinder stops the piston dead — because liquid can't compress, it can bend a con-rod and destroy the engine.)£1,200-£4,500+
Turbos (TDV8, engine-out)very high
Air suspension parts£100s each
Brakes per axle£235+ (more for Brembo?Brembo — Premium Italian brake maker; larger discs and multi-piston fixed calipers give stronger, more fade-resistant braking on heavy/fast cars.)

Saving money sensibly

  • Use a known L322 specialist — they won't miss the items that cause big failures.
  • Preventive servicing (gearbox fluid, coolant pipe) is far cheaper than failure.
  • Consider LPG on a petrol if you cover big miles.
  • Keep a contingency fund, treat ~£1,000-2,000/yr as realistic on an older car.

Verdict

VERDICT Run an L322 on a realistic budget with a good specialist and it's a superb, affordable-to-buy luxury car. Try to run one on a shoestring and skip maintenance, and it will cost you far more in the end.
